A coyote (canis latrans) pauses for a moment to watch some elk cross the field behind him in the morning rain. Waterton Lakes National Park, Alberta, Canada.

My dad and I were out photographing some elk during the rut this fall when we spotted this lone coyote trotting through the field. We managed to get a decent angle to photograph him and just as I started shooting he stopped and looked back at the elk! I love his cute expression in this picture and all his wet fur, as well as the way the native grasses around him show his habitat.
